Evaluation for the production; Lost Obsessions.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RE-XO-3-v5I&feature=player_embedded
In the planning stage of making our production we first looked at many different film genres so that we were able to look at the conventional aspects of each of them so we would be aware of how to portray our chosen genre effectively. [ http://www.filmsite.org/genres.html ] we chose to make our production a mystery, thriller. Therefore we made our first two minutes with traits of these genres. The beginning is; slow paced, dark, giving the audience a small overview of what is to happen, giving it the mystery element. Straight after giving an overview we added a flash back; we chose to do this to give complexity and to show the mental state of our main character ‘Tommy Wilson’. The second shot in our opening sequence is fast paced with mild violence, giving it the thriller element. We chose to capture both of these in the opening sequence so straight away the audience know exactly what genre the film is.
Before we made a script for our production we had to initially think of what age rating was most appropriate for what we wanted to present. Again, we researched the age ratings and decided that to rate it with a 15 certificate [ http://www.blogger.com/blogger.g?blogID=9121064622042177485#editor/target=post;postID=5029872368307681837 ]we wrote a nonlinier script so again this effected what age rating we chose. While writing the script we wanted to try and capture the age rating and genres together so that we could get the attention of our target audience.
Our target is someone aged 15 or over and who has an interest in mystery, thriller. We sent out a questionnaire to people who fitted with the age rating to receive feedback from our film synopsis. But not only to do that. We sent out the questionnaires to find out if we were targeting the right audience with our ideas and to find out if this is something they would be interested in or something they disliked. The character roles in our production; we believe someone could relate to. We believe that the people might also be interested in the film if they felt that they could relate, so we thought they would also be our target audience.
When filming we made ourselves aware of what camera shots/angles were most appropriate to out genre. We knew that the shots would have to be quick on the fight scene to add to the suspense we needed it to look more brutal. With the first scene though we decided to make the pan unsteady to make it look like someone is in the room with Tommy Wilson. It makes it look more sinister as there appear to be someone watching him. We made this shot long so that we could show the audience the location/environment where Tommy Wilson is. We use an over the shoulder shot so his identity remains a mystery; we also did this so the main focus wouldn’t be on him as we wanted to show the audience the picture of his mother wearing the locket as this is one of the key elements to our story line.
The music used in the opening we created ourselves. We took the clip of the nursery rhyme ‘Lucy Locket’ and warped it. http://www.blogger.com/blogger.g?blogID=9121064622042177485#editor/target=post;postID=731217767049509511 We made it so that it would sound like two different people are singing it. This is used to represent Tommy Wilson’ personality. We wanted him to have two different sides to his personality. We also used a heart beat that gradually stops and the end scene finishes with a solid beep representing that the heart has stopped; representing the death of his mother.
The costumes used in the opening sequence follow the typical stereo types. Tommy is dressed as the usual teenage boy. He wears a black hooded jumper and tracksuit bottoms. His character is suppose to look mysterious as we don’t want the audience to understand him completely in the beginning because we want them to have to wait (this would make it more intense). The murderer again is clothed representing stereotypes. He has his face covered with a hooded jacket. Ms Wilson is dressed with a mumsy fashion so that she looks innocent because we don’t want the audience to think she has. We decided to follow the stereotypes as it would make it more easier for the audience to understand the characters. Also they might then be able to see why they act the way the characters do.
We had to buy a few of the props that we used for example the poster. This was to make his room look more believable. We used a large room to film the bedroom scene so we had to have many props like some CDs, lamp and a magazine so that it actually looked like a bedroom. We used the lights to manipulate the size of the room so it looked much smaller than what it actually was. The key prop however was the locket. This was the main focus point.
Finding the locations to film was the hardest part for us. As what we wanted to show in the film we were not able to provide ourselves with at first. Eventually we found a large room that we could use to make the bedroom and then we used a house to film the fight scene. With the fight scene it was easy to make it look how we wanted because it was exactly what we needed. But the bedroom scene was much harder as it was just a large room so we had to use many props and the correct lighting to make it look how we wanted it to. We made the lighting for the bedroom minimal and just coming from one angle. http://www.blogger.com/blogger.g?blogID=9121064622042177485#editor/target=post;postID=5108712223367530036
The typography used in the opening titles are plain white on a black screen. This is done like this, in a simple font because this looks more effective. It is straight to the point, punchy and adds to the eeriness of our film.
The opening sequence only shows three characters: Tommy Wilson, Ms Wilson and the murderer. We deliberately did this so that the audience could focus on the main character - Tommy. He is a teenage stereotype for a boy who is going through a tough time in his life. His body language (slouched on the bed) gives the audience the impression of him not caring for his surroundings. His room shows minimal possessions again relating to his characters personality. he doesn’t have much to. The mise en scene of the first scene gives the audience an idea of how Tommy’s life is. We used a high angle shot over Tommy so that the audience can see that he is not in control. We purposely made the lighting in his bedroom minimal so it isn’t very clear when watching it because we wanted him to remain mysterious. We made it represent how Tommy is trying to act. Tying to go unnoticed because of what he has become (a killer) we made it so that his mothers murderer and Tommy looked very similar to show what Tommy is turning into. http://www.blogger.com/blogger.g?blogID=9121064622042177485#editor/target=post;postID=570068923777762706
When thinking about which institute would be the best to distribute our film production that would be most effective to make an impact to attract our target audience we found out about momentum pictures- http://www.momentumpictures.co.uk/.Which is an independent film company that has distributed films such as ‘The Woman In Black’ this is of a similar genre to our films. This distributor would be able to provide funding for a film like ours. Our film would most likely attract a neesh audience so independent funding would be required. They would be able to distribute it effectively because they have people interested in films such as ours.
The feedback from our films focused on the character Tommy. This was a positive outcome. I think we have been able to attract our target audience because people understand and are intrigued by Tommy. When planning our production we sent out questionnaires and so when creating the opening sequence we took into account the responses so we have been able to affectively address what they requested. We might have needed the opening sequence to involve more action because that would have been more ideal because then our target audience would have found it more interesting in the beginning but we wanted it to leave them wanting to watch the rest. For it to work it needed to be dark and it needed to the slight confusion because it was representing the characters views and mainly how Tommy’s life had become.
When creating our media project we used many different types of technology. We recorded our progress of pre-production/production/post-production on a Google Blogger. We were told we had to do this as it was the most effective way to record what we were doing, this also made it so we were all able to access our progress in one place. Google Blogger was simple to use and made it so we could put on images, sounds and documents containing information about our ideas and how we were putting them into action. We used another Google website named Google questionnaire; this made it our questionnaires look very professional and therefore easier for us to get feedback from our target audience.
We recorded the footage used in our opening sequence on a digital camera. (in our preliminary task we were taught how to use this properly) to footage is a good picture quality so that it looks professional and presentable to an audience. When then imported the clips that we recorded on to a MAC computer, so we could edit the footage and make sure that there were no continuity issues. We edited the footage using Final Cut Express. I had used this technology before but when I was using it to edit this time I was taught how to use to more effectively and our production benefitted much from this. Also in this stage of the production we had got our SFX sound created so we could then add this to our production. Because we had muted the audio taken when filming so we could add the music afterwards to make it sound much better. We also added our title shots at this point.
we created our logo on Photoshop so that it looked professional and smart for us to present it at the beginning of production.
Comparing this current task to our preliminary task I am able to see how much I have improved. Especially when using Final Cut Express. The preliminary task of filing opening a door, crossing a room, sitting down in a chair opposite another character with whom they exchange a couple of lines of dialog with now seems so simple compared to the planning that we have had to put into this task to make it look effective and like a real media production should be to a good distributing standard.
I’m glad I did the preliminary task because many of the methods I used when doing that task I used while creating this media production; however now I feel a lot more confident in my ability to edit. I have leaned how to use the editing software in the correct way and I am now able to make my products look how I imagine/want them to.

Evaluation- Courtney wheatman
http://bcasmedia2012group17.blogspot.co.uk/2012_03_01_archive.html When we were told we had to create a 2 min film we also got told that it all had to put all our work on Google blogger. I had never used this software before and it took a while to get use to but I eventually got the hang of how to make the blogger look good and official. I think this was the best way of showing our work as it was clear and really easy to upload videos and pictures. It was also good because of the fact that all out group could access it and make different changes to out blogger.
7, Looking back at our preliminary task I can
she we have really improved these past months. From doing our preliminary task
we learnt the basic rules of filming and also how to use final cut express. Our
preliminary tasks consisted of opening a door, walking across a room and
sitting down and having a conversation. By creating this short film we learnt
things like shot reverse shot and following the 180-degree rule, we needed to
know these to make our 2 min film more professional.
1,
When we first started to think of a storyline for our film we had to take into consideration
a number of things, firstly we had to decide what age certificate we were going
to rate our film, after considering different certificates we decide on a 15
because this it the nearest to our age so would be the easiest for us to do. We
also had to think about what genre our film would be, we decide to do a mystery
thriller because this is the one we were the most interested in and we thought
we could have the most fun with. After looking into mystery thrillers more
closely we started planning are narrative and were coming up with ideas that
fitted with both our age certificate and our genre. we liked the first ideas we
came up with but we decided they would be too tricky to film and would take us
longer to film, so we decide on a narrative which would be simple but effective
at the same time.
Throughout
our film we had to make sure everything we did fitted without age certificate
and genre to make the narrative more convincing for example
Props-
we bought posters and magazines to use while filming the Tommy Wilson in his
bedroom scene to make the room look more convincing and also to try and portray
to the audiance tommy personality without him having to say anything.
Costumes-
costumes were very important throughout out film because there is hardly any dialogue
so the costumes had to show the audiance what kind of people all the characters
are and show their personalities.
Locations-
Out of everything i think locations were the hardest to do because being a part
of an all-girl group none of us had a boy bedroom to film in. So with the right
props and lighting we were able to create the right kind of atmosphere and
setting for a boys bedroom out of an plain empty room.
Also
the sounds we used during are film had to be right to make it more intense and
interesting. During the first scene (In Tommy Wilson bedroom) we decided to add
a creepy version of the song Lucy Locket to represent the locket which is an
important part of our film. Also on the second scene (the fight scene) we
decided to add a heartbeat to make the scene more intense, at the end of the
scene the sounds changes to a flat line sounds to show that Mrs Wilson is dead.

2,
In the first scene of our film we see the main character Tommy Wilson. The Mise en scene gives the audience an insight into Tommys livelihood and
shows a little of his personality and what he's about. We hope that the Mise en
scene doesn’t give too much away as we wanted Tommy Wilson to be a mysterious
character that you have to learn about over the entire process of the film. We
show Tommy Wilson in over the shoulder shots to hide away his face, because we didn’t
want the audience to get attached to Tommys character, we wanted them to judge
him simply on the location and props in the scene. We also created our own
music especially for the scene to give off a little of how Tommys mind works,
we wanted to show him as having a split personality reflecting it through the
music. The beginning starts off quiet and soft reflecting the first impressions
we get of a normal teenage boy but the music then changes reflecting Tommys
split personality into a deranged deeper voice that is distorted, like Tommys
mind.
3.
We researched many distributers for our film and we found many different
institutions.
4.
Our film is aimed at an audience of over 15 year olds, we believe our film
would be too horrific for anyone under the age of 15 to witness. We also think
that people of this age range would be able to connect with the characters. For example
teenagers that are dealing with loss may relate to tommy and understand how he
feels. Also on our questionnaire we asked what the audiance thought would be an
appropriate age certificate for our film and the majority of people answer 15. After we had finished our film we
posted it on the website YouTube to get more opinions from our target audience
and to see if we achieved the outcome we were aiming for.
5. Throughout the making of our film we had to research our target audience. When we were planning our
film we looked into the different essentials that would appeal to people ages
15 and above. The main character in our film (Tommy Wilson) is the same age as
the maost of our target audience, so this helps them to relate to the character.
6, All the way through the creating of our film we had
to learn different technologies that we had to use to make our film and blogger
the best we could make it.
Blogger
http://bcasmedia2012group17.blogspot.co.uk/2012_03_01_archive.html When we were told we had to create a 2 min film we also got told that it all had to put all our work on Google blogger. It was also good because of the fact that all out group could access it and make different changes to out blogger.
Film
We decided to shoot out film with a
digital camera; we decide this because we had already learned how to use the
camera during our preliminary task and because we wanted the best quality for
our film. I think this was the best way to shoot our film however some of the
shots we wanted to film were more difficult the we first thought.
Internet We
used the internet throughout our whole project. We used the internet a lot to
ensure our blog would look professional. For example: Youtube. We used this website for ideas and research.
We used the thinks we learnt in our 2 minute
film, for example during our fight scene we made sure we didn’t break the 180-degree
rule, this was important as it made our film look more effective and
professional.
I believe that since the preliminary task I have
improved in many things but the main one I believe I have had the most
improvement in is using final cut express and editing our film. I believe that
we understand more about what we wanted to do and how to do it. We also managed
to do different types of editing that we didn’t use during the preliminary
task. For example using different transitions and also messing around with
pitch and speed of our clips.

Evaluation - Natalie Dvelys
1.When first deciding what our film was going to be about we looked into the genre that we understood the most which would be easier for us to convey throughout our film; and the result of this was mystery thriller. We knew all of the different conventions of this genre, so we knew what to use in our film to make sure the audience realised what the genre was. After choosing the genre we then had to come up with the Narrative for our film by looking at the different aspects needed in order for our film to appeal to our target audience. (15) We did choose a difficult narrative for our film but this only made us more determined to achieve the best of our abilities. Our script is non-linear as in the beginning of our film we have a flashback which we needed to use to explain to our audience the reason why Tommy is so messed up and what the film is based around. http://bcasmedia2012group17.blogspot.co.uk/ (30th March Post). Finally, when planning our film we focused on how we could make it look professional and the ideas which we concentrating on the most were using continuity and the 180⁰ rule.

Whilst filming our scenes we had to make sure everything was based around the genre and narrative. Such as:
- Every camera angle/shot movement was used because of a specific reason, for example in scene one the camera pans unsteadily across several newspaper clippings to show the audience that someone else is in the room and looking at these clippings.

These images show that the camera panned from the first shot to the shot below.
- We made sure that we had silence when filming unless there was dialogue because we planned to put music over the film.
-Each person’s costume had to portray each character correctly.
-The props had to relate to the genre, for example: the locket.
-The location had to be significant to our Narrative and look like we imagined it to be. We used an open room and made it look like a smaller bedroom with the lighting and props.

2. In the beginning sequence of our film we only show three characters, Tommy Wilson, his mother and the killer. Our main focus is on the character Tommy Wilson, who is a teenager that is lonely and at a very dark place in his life. We have tried to get this across to our audience in several ways, for example: The clothing that Tommy is wearing is a big baggy black jumper (with hood up) and jogging bottoms. This choice of clothing will immediately give the audience the impression that he doesn’t care about his appearance and the fact that he has his hood up suggests he is a withdrawn person. We hope that our audience stereotype him as a usual teenage boy but with more to his personality. The mise en scene of the first scene gives the audience an idea of what Tommy’s life his like. His room is small and plain. The lighting is very dark and so is the very little amount of accessories which helps to describe his personality. Also in this scene we created our own music to use which consists of two different vocals that link into the Narrative of the film and can relate to Tommy’s personality, as there is two sides to him. The main way which we knew would show how audience that Tommy as no power and may be seen as poor, as he has nothing in his life, was through the camera angles we used, such as: high angle shots that looked down on this character.
- The Clothing Idea for Tommy Wilson.
3. When researching a distributer for our film we found many different institutions that suited our genre and storyline. For example: One of these institutions was The Momentum pictures independent film distributers: http://www.momentumpictures.co.uk/. This distribution company relates to our film perfectly as it is known to distribute thrillers, such as: The Woman in Black and Vanishing. Both of these films became really successful with the help of this company, this was because of the budget they used on these films and how well known they are. This company inspired us when distributing our own film and gave us ideas that we could use.
4. Our target audience for our film is 15 the reason for this is because we thought our film best suited this age category and was too inappropriate for anyone younger as it contained strong language and violence. (http://bcasmedia2012group17.blogspot.co.uk/2012/02/suitable-only-for-15-years-and-over-no.html) Also we found that our target audience age range may be able to relate to some of the characters and some of the emotions they are going through or their lifestyle choices. Before filming the opening sequence we had to make sure that it suited our target audience and would give off the right impression. So we sent a questionnaire out to a variety of people aged 15 and over to get their opinions on what they would prefer and what they dislike. (http://bcasmedia2012group17.blogspot.co.uk/2012/03/questionnaire.html) By doing this we got the feedback we were hoping for with only small changes to be put into place.
After we had finished our film we posted it on the website YouTube to get more opinions from our target audience and to see if we achieved the outcome we were aiming for.

5. Throughout creating our film one of our most important things that we concentrated on was making sure that our film attracted/addressed our target audience. When planning our film we looked into the different elements that would attract people aged 15 and above, for example: the character of Tommy Wilson. The main character in our film is the same age of a majority of our target audience, therefore shares the same qualities and emotions as them (teenagers). This helps the audience to relate to this character and understand more about what he his feeling and will make them want to keep watching to find out what the outcome will be. http://bcasmedia2012group17.blogspot.co.uk/2012/05/we-asked-several-people-from-our-target.html
6. All the way through the process of constructing this product we were introduced to new technologies that we had to learn how to use to make our film and blogger the best they can be.use it correctly and effectively.
FilmWe decided to shoot our film on a digital camera to give our film a better quality. We had already learnt how to use this sort of camera however we hadn’t used it for some of the shots we wanted to use consequently meaning that some shots were better than others. We then imported our clips onto a MAC where we used final cut express to edit all of our film, inserting SFX, Music, Title shots and many more effects. InternetWe used the internet throughout this whole process for many different reasons. One of these reasons was to make sure that everything looked professional, down to the last detail. For example: We used a website which was again new to us, called Google Questionnaire. This was to create our pre-questionnaire to give out to our target audience. The end product looked really proficient and was really easy to create. (http://bcasmedia2012group17.blogspot.co.uk/2012/03/questionnaire.html, http://bcasmedia2012group17.blogspot.co.uk/2012/03/from-our-questionnaire-these-are.html, https://docs.google.com/?pli=1#home)

7. Looking back at my preliminary task I can compare and see how much I have improved and learnt throughout these past months. Our preliminary task brief told us exactly what was expected from us and explained the three different things we needed to demonstrate in order for us to be successful. In contract to this the brief for our main task was only simple and we had to start from scratch and learn new things such as, technologies, to make our film successful and professional.
The preliminary task did help with our main task as from our first task we knew the three rules that we had to stick too when filming: match on action, shot/reverse shot and the 180degree rule. By using these three basic rules and learning more throughout this process it has shown a great improvement. I now believe that I am confident in planning, filming and editing a short sequence effectively.

Picture Storyboards
The camera pans across the newspaper clippings. Across then Down. Lucy Locket is playing in the background.
A wide shot of the picture on Tommys bedside table.

An over the shoulder shot of Tommy holding the photoframe.
An close up of the picture of Tommys Mum.
A n extra close up of the shot above.
A low angle establishing shot of Tommys Mum answering the door. This shot should stay the same for the next ten shots as it is all filmed from Tommy's view point which is from underneath the table. In this sequence the murder and Tommy's Mother will fight; the murderer will then grab for the nearest heavy object and hit Tommy's Mother over the head knocking her unconscious. He will then leave with the locket.
The above shot will then fade into an extra close up of the photo frame (again) which will zoom out slowly to the following shot.A close up of Tommy still holding the picture. Dialogue - Don't worry Mummy we'll find it.
Here is the questionnaire that we have created on Google Docs for our target audience to complete in order for us to find out if our film was successful and what went well and what we need to improve on. 10 People from the age range 15 and above were asked to complete this once they had watched our film.

Lighting
Scene 1 and 3 :
Both scene 1 and 3 are set in the same room which means we will be using the same light for both of these scenes. We will be filming this scene in darkness, with just a ray of light (a bed side lamp) so that the audience is able to see what is happening and to make the room look mysterious and gloomy. The colours of the room will be dull and plain, this will help to represent Tommy's personality and give the audience an idea of what type/genre of film this is. We are also going to use a simple light, maybe a torch/small light, on the focus of the picture of Tommy's Mother wearing the locket. This will immediately draw the audiences attention towards the locket and make them interested to find out why the locket is so important and what is going to happen throughout the film.

Scene 2:
Scene 2 is the flashback of Tommy's Mother being murdered. The lighting for this scene is the antithesis of scene 1 and 3. This scene will be filmed in daylight so that the room is bright and open. The colours we are using in this scene will be vibrant and eye catching, this is to represent how life used to be before the murder and that Tommy hasn't always had the personality he now has. (Which will be shown throughout the film). There will be no main focus of light in this scene as everything will be clear so that the audience can understand and see exactly what is going on.
We are hoping to show a clear contrast between all three scenes and hopefully we will create the right effect for the audience and achieve the reaction we want.

SCENE 1. INT. EVENING. TOMMY WILSONS BEDROOM.
The camera slowly pans around a small, dingy room showing the environment that Tommy Wilson lives in. Whilst panning, the camera focuses on several newspaper clippings scattered on the bed. These newspaper clippings all contain pictures and stories about the deaths of women that are all related by a single locket. The camera then stops, on a photograph of a middle aged woman in a rusty, old frame. The camera gradually zooms into the picture focusing on the locket that the woman is wearing around her neck. Tommy Wilson reaches out to the photo but only his hand is shown.
Throughout the scene the nursery rhyme Lucy Locket is playing in the background. (Non Diegetic)
SCENE 2. INT. DAYTIME. HOUSE.
(Flashback) A low angle shot from underneath a table is used, looking up at Tommy's mum and the murderer arguing indoors.
TOMMY'S MUM - what are you doing here? GET OUT!
A low angle shot shows a struggle between Tommy's mum and the murderer as the murderer attacks her.
TOMMY'S MUM - (screams) AHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH!
Quick flashes of low angle shots then continue to show the murderer gaining power over Tommy's mum.
The murderer reaches for the nearest heavy object striking it towards Tommy's Mum's head causing her to collapse to the floor. The murderer then pulls the locket from around Tommy's Mum's neck and walks back out of the door.
(The murderer leaves the scene)
The camera then moves towards the body showing that Tommy is getting closer to his mother.
TOMMY WILSON - (crying/sniffling)
A tear drop falls as Tommy Wilson places his hand on his mother.
(This shot then flashes back to the same setting as the first scene, and Tommy still as his hand on the picture of his mother)
Throughout this scene eerie music is playing in the background.

TOMMY WILSON - don't worry mummy, we'll find it.
END OF SCENE.

This is our production logo, we chose to include the first letter of all our names to show we are all a part of our company and to show we are all contributing towards our film. We also decide on different colours and fonts to show all our different personalities and also to make it look different and stand out. we will use this at the beginning of our film to show who we are.
From our questionnaire these are the answers that we were given from a variety of different people. Although we didn't get some of the answers we hoped for, for example: the genre of the film, this made us even more determined to make our film successful and create the right impression for the audience. Overall most of the feedback we were given was very positive and made us confident with the story line of our film.

Location 2; Courtneys house for our flashback scene
This is the table that we will be sitting under to film the scene from Tommy Wilsons point of view.
This is the view from underneath the table where we will be filming so we can see the full bodys of the fight scene.
This is our second location where we ill be filming the flash back scene of Mrs Wilsons death. We have taken under the table views of the room because that is where we will be filming from under so we can see the fight scene more clearly. We are filming it from Tommy Wilsons point of view as a child so he will look like he is hiding from the fight under the table. This room is the perfect size for our second scene and is easy to work with to make our scene look more effective.
This is our finished version of the lucy locket song, we sent it to our friend in the music department to make it sound creepy.
We think that this is the perfect song now it is finished for our film as it refelcts both sides of Tommy Wilsons personality.
The children singing in the song represent Tommy Wilsons childhood and how happy he was when he was young, however the deeper voice in the backgroud of the song represents Tommys Wilsons mind after his mothers death and how its spiralling down hill. We think that the deeper voice represents the devilish side of him, his murderous side whereas the childrens voices show his angelic child like state. We will use this song as a non diegetic sound throughout the first scene of our film to show the relevance of the locket as it is the main focus of our film. We hope by using this song the audience will be able to understand the storyline of our film in more depth.
